Dullstroom is calling all potjiekos enthusiasts for the ultimate showdown! On Saturday, 22 February 2025, the quaint town will host the DBTA/SAACA Potjiekos Challenge Qualifying Round at the Dullstroom Village Green.

Whether you’re a Professional Chef representing a restaurant or a passionate Non-Professional Home Cook, this event offers you the chance to showcase your potjie-making skills. Winners from both categories will advance to the finals in August, where one team will be crowned South Africa's Ultimate Potjiekos Champion!


Event Details:


  • Date: Saturday, 22 February 2025
  • Venue: Dullstroom Village Green
  • Time:
    • Set-Up: From 7:00 AM
    • Preparation: From 9:00 AM
    • Judging: Approximately 1:00 PM
  • Entry Fee: R650 per team
  • Entry Deadline: 7 February 2025
  • Team Size: 1–6 people

What the Organizers Provide:


  • A harvest table with fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Exciting prizes for participants and winners.


What Teams Need to Bring:


  • A metal sheet to protect the grass (no gas fires allowed).
  • 1 kg of meat of your choice.
  • “Secret ingredients” like wine, port, or additional vegetables, herbs, and spices.
  • Potjies, utensils, and cooking equipment.
  • Gazebos, tables, chairs, cutlery, crockery, and glasses.
  • Refreshments (alcoholic or non-alcoholic).
  • Decor to match your chosen theme.


Judging Criteria:


  • Fire management.
  • Theme, decor, team engagement, and spirit.
  • Taste of the potjie.
  • Side dishes.
  • Overall presentation.


Competition Rules:


  • Only wood and charcoal fires are permitted (no gas allowed).
  • Each team must produce:
    • A starter dish.
    • A main potjie dish with a starch side.
    • A dessert (pre-prepared desserts are allowed, but additional points are awarded for cooking on the day).
  • Teams must have a functioning fire extinguisher during the event.
  • Hygiene and cleanliness are essential.
  • Participants must remain until final judging and prize-giving.


Additional Highlights:


  • Fundraising Opportunity: Teams are encouraged to raise funds for the Southern Africa Animal Cancer Association (SAACA). A prize will be awarded to the team that raises the most funds.
  • Branding: Corporate and professional teams may bring branded gazebos and other items for their stands.

While the potjie chefs compete, visitors can enjoy:

  • A vibrant local village flea market.
  • Delicious food stalls.
  • Family-friendly activities.
